Laying in food

How do i get finches from setting and laying in there food nest?.There are six birds in flight cage.

Answer:

Hi David,

The best thing to do is buy cups that are too small and place several in the cage to replace the larger cups. There are some feeders that have a small reservoir, and the food drops down as the bird eats. These can work with pellets or seed, but you have to get several or they will fight over food, and you also have to make sure the food does not get stuck of they can accidentally starve. They can be found by searching automatic feeder or food dispenser for pet birds. If you feed seed, there is an additional concern with smaller cups and feeders, because finches will tend to eat and drop the hull back into the food dish. Pet finches have been known to starve because a pile of hulls were on top of uneaten seeds. They do not push the hulls out of the feeder like a parrot would. But you do need to find a way to keep them out of the food, because if they decide the food cups are nests, the birds will start fighting.
