Lovebirds mating /laying eggs

My under 1 yr old female
Lovebird has started laying eggs. She has a 2 yr old male partner.
I’m worried now for her health as I’ve just discovered the issues that can occur with egg laying.
So far she has had 2 eggs
Can i stop this now that she has started laying?.
Can I separate the 2 birds and remove the eggs.

Answer:

Hi Cori,

I would go ahead and split the birds up and discard the eggs. It’s unlikely they would hatch them anyway. First clutches almost always fail, and especially with birds that are too young. I would not let them share a cage until she is over 2. Birds should not be given a mate until both birds are old enough to breed, or as you have discovered, they don’t wait. It’s better to let her finish developing and let them breed when she is old enough. They have a better chance of success when both birds are old enough.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
