My Cocatoo

Is it possible that a lone female will Nest even without male contact

Answer:

Hi Frances,

Yes, but if your female Cockatoo is trying to nest, you need to discourage her. Do not give her a box or anything she can use as a nest. If she is shredding paper or cardboard and trying to make a nest, take it away. You do not want her to start laying eggs. With Cockatoos, they can often turn into chronic egg layers and end up needing hormone treatment to stop. If she starts laying eggs and continues doing it, it can kill her. Go ahead and limit her light to 8-10 hours by covering her cage early each evening. When you handle her, it is very important that you limit contact to her head and neck. I know it is tempting to cuddle with her, but this is something only a mate would be allowed to do, and it triggers her hormones. We have learned it’s not good to cuddle with our pet birds, no matter how much you want to. Try other forms of interaction like teaching her some behaviors or some foraging activity.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
