NASTY, BITING PARROT.

Hello there,
Why is my 3yr old female Indian Ringneck Parrot nasty all the time; she smashes her perspective swing continually with her beak backwards & forwards, & she has also attacked a Canary we have a couple of times as well? Thankyou kindly for your professional advice in advance.

Regards, Jane. (Sydney. Aust.)

Answer:

Hi Jane,

This sounds like it could be territorial behavior due to hormones. She definitely is not happy about something. Attacking a toy or other object is usually done when the bird cannot reach who or what they truly want to attack. It’s hard to give advice because I don’t know enough about the situation – is she tame? is she in a cage by herself? is she allowed to roam freely? I don’t understand how she could possibly be in a position to attack a canary. These are two species that should never have contact with each other. Parrots have a powerful beak and can easily kill a small song bird. They should be kept strictly separate. The canary is very lucky to have survived not one but two attacks. I can’t warn you sternly enough to keep these birds apart. I would recommend that you evaluate your situation and learn more about bird behavior in order to be able to get more specific advice.
