older Amazon

Should an older Amazon parrot–aged 45–receive any special care?

Answer:

Hi Elizabeth,

Amazons are wonderful birds and at 45, your guy should still have a lot of years left if he is on a good diet and overall healthy. We do make a diet for Senior birds – Senior Bird Nutri-Berries https://lafeber.com/pet-food/bird-food/senior-bird/. While it can be fed for any life stage, there are specific supplements in it that are particularly helpful for senior birds.

If he does not have a regular Avian Vet, it’s a good time to start taking him for routine check ups and bloodwork. This can be the earliest indication of any health concerns.

If he is showing any physical slow down, sometimes a larger, flat perch can be more stable for him. Older birds can develop arthritis. The senior bird diet can also help with joint problems.

Mainly, don’t make major changes and don’t change anything too quickly. He has done well so you don’t want to stress him out and create a problem.

And here is a great article on our site about older parrots: https://lafeber.com/pet-birds/what-is-a-geriatric-parrot/

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
