parakeet wings

i dont know who did it but my birds missing 3 tips on her right wing. her behavor is funny. can she die from it and what can i do to help?

Answer:

Hi Kandy,

If this is a new bird, the breeder probably clipped the wing feathers before you bought her. This is just like getting a haircut and the feathers will eventually fall out when the bird molts and grows new feathers. If this is your bird you already had, perhaps she broke the feathers on something in the cage? If it is just the feather tips, she will be OK. Do you have any kids in the house who might have cut the feathers? Or any other pets who could have reached her, like a cat or dog or another bird? Birds can get upset for a short time after getting a wing trim. A professional should always clip the wing feathers for you because when the feathers are growing, they have a blood supply. It can be very dangerous to cut a “blood” feather. But if this happened, you would know because there would be a lot of blood in the cage. I’m not sure I fully understand what happened here but it sounds like she will be fine.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
