Quaker parrot eggs

My quaker has laid 3 eggs and has been sitting on them continously for the last 2 months. Her cage was never closed and she was very social previously, now she will not leave her cage. I am getting worried about her. She is eating and drinking normally.

Answer:

H Jennifer,

When a single bird lays eggs, she should be allowed to sit on them within reason. Since normal incubation is 3-4 weeks, then this is the maximum time she should be allowed to keep the eggs. I would throw the eggs away, clean the cage thoroughly, move some things around in it, maybe relocate the cage somewhere else in the room and give her a couple of new toys. Hopefully this will be disruptive enough to keep her from turning around and laying eggs again. One problem with letting a bird come and go as they please is they may come to think of their cage as a large nest. Right now this is what she is doing. You don’t want her to become a chronic eggs layer so work on a routine where you get her out of the cage and put her back when you are not handling her. Don’t give her anything to use as a nest or anything to shred or use as nesting material. Move her cage regularly so she doesn’t view it as a stable place to lay eggs.
