Unexpected budgie behaviour/act

Hello, so, I got two parakeets for Christmas. I already know so much about them, but. Something really weird happened in the middle of the second night. At 4:43am in the morning, I just heard a weird loud like a banging noise in the cage. But not chirping. When I woke up around 9am and looked over, I saw some blood stains in the cage. I got shocked and realized that one of them must’ve did something, but idk how and why? In the morning, my parakeet was totally fine, eating, chirping, like a normal parakeet would do. But there’s just pure blood. I don’t know what happened. They’re doing absolutely okay, but still. Does anyone know what could’ve happened through the night, and if I have to do something or will it ever happen again? Thank you so much.

Answer:

Hi Adele,

It takes time for birds to get used to a new home. Something scared the bird and since they can’t see well in the dark, the bird panicked. If the cage wasn’t covered, maybe a car drove by and the bird saw the lights. It could have been a noise like a barking dog. One of the birds may have broken a blood feather, but luckily maybe the rest of the feather came out since you didn’t see blood on either bird. If you aren’t covering the cage, you might try that – just a lightweight towel or sheet will work. Hopefully it won’t happen again.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
