which is better

i have a male zebra finch named sumo and i want to give him some friends. is it ok if i give him 2 male friends or will he hurt them?

Hi Mason,

Since finches are generally not a bird you handle, they do like to have a companion in the same cage. As long as your cage is large enough, a second bird should be fine. Two males will usually get along as long as you do not provide a nest or anything they might want to use as a nest. It is never a good idea to have an odd number of birds because one will end up being left out and bullied.

If you get a second bird, you also need a second cage to begin with. A new bird should be quarantined for at least 30 days to make sure it does not have any type of illness. After that, you can place the cages side by side so the birds can get used to each other. when you do put them in the same cage, they need to be watched closely at first for any signs of aggression or fighting. You should have 2 food dishes and 2 water dishes and more than one perch. Also try not to get a baby or very young finch or the older bird may pick on it.
