Zebra finch beak

I have a male zebra finch and his beak is growing at the tip top and bottom – looks like 2 little spikes growing out – they are pale in color. He doesn’t seem to be having any trouble eating. I put a cuttle bone and some natural bark perches in his cage but I don’t see any improvement. Otherwise he seems fine.

Answer:

Hi Jeanette,

When this happens in a finch, it is usually due to a nutritional deficiency. Like any pet bird, finches need a nutritionally balanced diet like pellets – a seed mix does not offer the nutrition they need. I would recommend taking him to an Avian Vet to have the beak trimmed and to discuss nutrition. The beak is not going to correct itself. Since finches do not chew, he really can’t wear down the overgrowth. If you can get his nutrition and health improved, the beak should stop over growing, but the initial overgrowth still needs to be trimmed sway by a professional.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
