Diamond Doves- Eggs w/o shell

I have two diamond Doves one has started laying eggs with a clear soft shell, she seems to be in pain when this happens, Can you help?

Answer:

Hi Susan,

This is a sign of a severe calcium deficiency which can be fatal, either through egg binding or organ failure. Ideally you need to take her to an avian vet as soon as possible. They may need to give an injection to begin with. You can supplement calcium by feeding cooked eggs with the eggshells crushed and mixed in, shaving cuttlebone over the feed or a Vet recommended supplement. If they are not on a nutritionally balanced diet, they need to be on one. Diamond Doves can eat Finch pellets which are generally made as a crumble. You can also offer cooked brown rice with chopped mixed veggies, multi grain bread and dark leafy greens. You should remove their nest until her calcium level is up to normal.
