Mixed aviaries

I have communal aviaries and cages. How should I present food for 3 different bird varieties – canary, finch and parakeet?

Answer:

Hi Kitty,

These birds can all eat the same diets – offer finch/canary foods as well as parakeet food. The parakeets will prefer larger seeds or pellets but the smaller birds will just eat around the larger food. You need to have multiple feeding stations in different areas. Also, do not provide any types of nests. If the birds start breeding, having them mixed will not work out. Breeding parakeets can be very aggressive and territorial, especially the females, and they can easily kill finches and canaries. Generally it is not a good idea to house parakeets with non-parrots because of the beak difference.
