Hi Abi,
Sometimes this happens with a male bird. I had a lovebird who did that most of his life. The main concern is loss of nutrients. It is important that he is on a nutritionally balanced diet and not a loose seed mix. This can be pellets or our foraging diets – Avi-Cakes, Nutri-Berries or Pellet-Berries. Are there other birds in the cage with him? Is he a pet you handle? When you handle him, it’s important to limit contact to head and neck scratches. When you pet a bird on the body, it can trigger their hormones. You can try some things that can discourage breeding behavior. Limit his daylight hours to 8-10 by covering his cage early in the evening. If he eats a lot of fresh foods, stop offering those for a while, and when you do offer them, limit it to a couple of times a week. Give him some new toys, but no mirrors, and keep rearranging the toys and perches in his cage. Move his cage to another place in the room about once a week or every other week. And don’t give him paper or anything similar to shred – no boxes, nests or anything he can use as a nest. Budgies are very social birds, so I’m surprised he hasn’t bonded with another one, male or female.
It doesn’t matter how veggies are prepared if the birds will eat them. Some prefer cooked, others want raw. Some like big pieces, others prefer chopped up. Budgies love whole broccoli florets, whole dark leafy greens, carrots, sweet potatoes, corn, and green beans as well as other veggies. They don’t always like fruit. They like to bite and chew, so maybe the chop is too fine. Feeding a parrot chop is mainly trendy. There is no advantage to offering veggies like that versus separately. Give them veggies the way they like them rather than trying to force them to eat them a specific way.
If your Vet has diagnosed your bird with a kidney issue, then really you need to consult with the vet about a recommended diet. We don’t know the actual diagnosis and can’t make a recommendation that might be contrary to what your vet has said to feed.
