Veterinary student at the University of Florida and under the direction of Dr Emma Schachner, is looking at how air sac anatomy in different avian species impacts cannula placement when anesthetizing birds.  

Veterinary student at the University of Florida and under the direction of Dr Emma Schachner, is helping to map out the skeletal and respiratory anatomy in different species of shearwaters and hawks. 

University of Florida PhD student under Dr Emma Schachner, is studying the postcranial pneumaticity and diversity in the nonventilatory diverticula of large North American owls. 

Dr. Gabriela Zonenshine graduated Summa cum laude from Cornell University with a dual degree in Biology and Animal Science and an honor’s research thesis. She then continued at Cornell University to achieve her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree.

Dr. Zonenshine completed a rotating small animal internship at Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital in Akron, Ohio, and then received her Masters of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Minnesota. She has a vast range of surgical experience, having completed two small animal surgical internships – one in minimally invasive surgery and advanced orthopedics at Guardian Veterinary Specialists, and another in interventional radiology research at the Animal Medical Center.

Dr. Zonenshine completed a OneHealth wildlife internship at the Wildlife Conservation Society and served as the veterinarian for the Turtleback Zoo in West Orange, NJ. She is completing her residency in Avian Medicine and Surgery at the Veterinary Center for Birds and Exotics in July 2026. She is the founder of her own nonprofit for endangered animals, The Gabby Wild Foundation, and has traveled the globe to protect an array of exotic species, from Jane Goodall’s chimpanzees in Uganda to elephants in Indonesia.

Currently, I am in my second year of a two year avian medicine and surgical residency at the Bird and Exotic Pet Wellness Clinic in Ohio. I graduated from the University of Missouri in 2019 and worked in the mixed animal and emergency medicine fields until acquiring my residency.
