Dr. Paul Flecknell is the director of the Comparative Biology Centre at The Medical School of the University of Newcastle in Newcastle upon the Tyne. Dr. Flecknell’s research interests focus on the welfare of animals used in biomedical research, and in particular issues associated with pain and distress. He has studied comparative aspects of pain assessment and alleviation and how this relates to animal anesthesia and the neurophysiogical effects of anesthesia. Dr. Flecknell is a Diplomate of the European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine and an honorary Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. Dr. Flecknell is also a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, and an honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Flecknell is the author of many journal papers as well as the text, Laboratory Animal Anaesthesia, Third Edition.
